How do you stay focused if you feel constant distraction or struggle with ADHD?
One effective practice is called Body Doubling.
Whether you feel alone at work or you cannot focus the mind, I’ve found that my brain can handle up to 2 hours/day of focus.
If I try to push through without a break, my brain power wanes.
I also found this to be true as a homeschool teacher for Eli whose attention span was max 2 hours/day if I was lucky.
Upon returning back to school, those 2 hours of focus time shot him grades ahead academically.
Consider it’s the same for adults.
Imagine what would get done if you truly focused for 2 hours/day?
Imagine the compound effect at play what long term success and dreams would be fulfilled.
I experimented creating a YouTube video “Deep Focus – Work With Me“ utilizing the Pomodoro technique of focusing in 25 minute increments, with 5 minute breaks over a span of 2 hours.
I was shocked at the results in what got accomplished, completing what normally would get get put off until the final hour.
How to Focus with an ADHD Mind
Skeptical at first, I wondered if ADHD was real. I scored off the charts for every ADHD test and many of my entrepreneur friends and clients have ADHD.
I couldn’t believe merely 2.4-6.7% of the population has ADHD, while about 30% of entrepreneurs are impacted, which made sense why it felt more common in my circles.
Still in denial, I got my family involved.
“This is dumb! Everyone is ADHD these days according to these tests.”
I made my husband and son, Leo and Eli take the test.
“What did you score?” expecting high test scores.
To my surprise, Leo and Eli both did NOT score high on the ADHD tests.
They both laughed at my assumption–and my world was rocked.
Was my brain really that different?
Uninterested in meds or formal diagnosis, I self diagnosed myself as an ADHD mind after taking numerous more tests then researched ways to work with an ADHD mind to optimize my productivity, high performance, and stay in flow.
Turns out, in my journey–I was already practicing and coaching my clients in many of the suggested ADHD self care practices of mindfulness, movement, nature, and music.
Now, instead of pushing beyond 2 hours of work exhausting my brain– I built my business to force breaks by teaching qigong, cooking, going outside, talking to someone, or cleaning.
Not as distractions but built in intentional wellness practices to flow from yang energy of doing to yin energy of receiving.
Building a custom daily flow takes time and patience. So what can you do instead?
For now, Body Doubling for Deep Focus is a good start. You can block out a 2 hour chunk of time to get something hard done, then body double with a someone or online.
I’ll be your friend to work alongside with, so you can get done what matters most to you.
If you want to better focus, cut through distractions, and have some good company, we’ll simply Body double LIVE with us next Wed April 1 at 9-10am PT happening in our Skool Community here
